Who We Are
|
Who We Are A cornerstone belief in developing Mentoring Brothers 2 Brother is that African American males need additional support systems and personal attention to be successful early in life (school/home). The support of this organization has helped them become better decision-makers. Our organization also lets them know someone does care about them and their future.
Mentoring Brother 2 Brother, Inc. was created to successfully mobilize young men between the crucial ages of 6 to 18, strategizing them through educational tutoring and further directing their paths away from “the streets,” gangs and prison, and energizing them to become productive and responsible citizens that can and will constructively contribute to society.
Mentoring Brother 2 Brother, Inc. is a program that started in 1999 with a vision. The vision was to help adolescent boys mature into young men. As a teacher I felt that the boys in the school were not getting the attention they needed to succeed. In the elementary school setting the majority of teachers are females. Most of these boys go home to single family homes with no male role model. So we took the initiative to talk to these boys about male issues. They responded very well and began to ask questions and relied on us to be there for them; therefore, that is why we started the mentoring program. We started with 8 boys and we met every Friday to have our weekly discussions. We talked about numerous subjects; in which they had a lot of interesting questions. We also talked about their week and what they could do better to have more success. Since we knew their classroom limitations, we provided additional tutoring services for the boys. We realized that we needed to be there for every aspect of their lives, the emotional, physical, and spiritual needs.
